Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor a stock production plan, and review and improve on production performance.This unit applies to personnel who have technical and coordination responsibilities for stock production and for improving production outcomes in an aquaculture facility. All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplaceNo licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Implement and monitor stock production plan
  • Convey production plan, policies and procedures to staff for implementation
  • Assess feed supplies against production plan and feeding schedule
  • Monitor distribution schedules and vary stocking rates, as required
  • Monitor stock growth or production using an appropriate performance recording system
  • Carry out harvesting according to workplace requirements to meet sales goals
  • Monitor stock health and promptly control any pest, parasite or disease outbreaks with samples being sent to relevant authorities
  • Monitor effects of feeds and health treatments on stock, and take actions to avoid or minimise stock health problems and negative effects on product quality
  • Review progress of production regularly with staff

  • Maintain physical and operations records for analysis and evaluation of production performance for senior management
  • Evaluate production performance at each stage to determine sustainability and profitability and for use in reviewing and revising production plans
  • Obtain and assess information on innovations relating to existing or potential workplace and facility activities to determine their relevance and possible application
  • Test relevant innovations to determine their suitability and adaptability, and report outcomes to senior management
  • Keep senior management informed of production schedule and performance

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has implemented, monitored and reviewed stock production on at least one occasion, including:

communicating with staff and senior management on stock husbandry and production operations

monitoring growth, health and welfare of stock against the workplace stock production plan

maintaining and analysing records on stock production

assessing and testing at least one profitable innovation option.

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

purpose of production plans, and methods for monitoring and reviewing performance against plan

culture stock physiology, biology and ecology

water quality and environmental testing techniques

biosecurity regulations

disease surveillance and treatment protocols

environmental protection guidelines in relation to stock production

production methods for a range of species or stock

stock husbandry and management

safe work practices in the context of stock production

continuous improvement processes and innovative approaches used in improving production performance, including mechanisation and automation research.

Assessment Tasks
